A Woman's Journey Through The Well

Join us on a woman’s journey through The Well. A seven part series highlighting a woman's experience at The Well.

At The Well, we aim to be a safe haven in the community for every woman who has ever entered our doors. We will be by her side no matter where she is in her journey. We are a community of women, fighting for women.

Part 1: We welcome her to The Well

There are many ways that a woman may enter our doors, whether she came for fresh produce, a warm shower, or some clothing for her family — she knows we are here for her as a rise up. We are The Well. We want to meet her where she is and provide compassion and support on her journey. We offer many ‘immediate need’ resources that allow her to rise above life’s challenges. This is our introduction to a woman who will likely journey with us for years to come.

Immediate need services we provide:

Oasis: a showering program at The Well that allows for women with no access to a shower to come in, freshen up, relax, eat lunch, and receive an outfit.

Feet to the Street: a friendly face on the streets, offering her everyday tools, such as toiletries, and inviting her to a safe place, The Well.

Food giveaway: Curtis Bay is a food desert, there is no access to fresh foods within walking distance. We host local farmers to sell fresh produce and will never let a sister-friend go hungry. In crises, we gather the troops and host meal drives for the community.

Hope Chest: A clothing distribution full of donated and gently used clothes for the woman and her family who walks through our doors!

Part 2: She enters The Well community

Building community is one of the key elements we do here at The Well. We are each on our journey of healing and invite our new sister-friends to be a part of our growing community.

We host large group events for the entire community, like Party on Pennington, Fun Fests, medical clinics, summer camps, Christmas parties, and the Women of Hope Life Group. Women of Hope meets every Thursday from 10-12 and every woman in our community is welcome to attend. This meeting has been occurring every Thursday for the past 18 years. We hold community with high importance because it allows for her to feel safe and not alone.

Part 3: She joins The Well’s COR Life Program.

The Well’s COR Life Development Program equips her to live above life's challenges. We empower one another in the community, through classes, peer support, and the healing power of love. This is a 6-month program, meeting 90 minutes each week.

Our program is broken down into our three core values: Community, Opportunity, and Responsibility (COR).

Throughout the program, we dive deep into subject matters such as healthy relationships, communication, taking responsibility, finance, job preparedness, understanding trauma, identity/self-esteem, and health.

Part 4: She is paired with a mentor

It’s important for us to walk alongside her every single step of the way. We live moment by moment for the next woman who walks through the door.

She is partnered with a mentor as they journey together through life’s ups and downs. The mentor gives support through hardships and trials but most importantly, mentors are there to rejoice in every victory and accomplishment that she has. Mentors and mentees are required to meet 2 hours a week to discuss goals, address roadblocks, hold accountability, and celebrate wins.

Part 5: She overcomes obstacles

Every woman in our program has a different journey. To love her entirely, we address every obstacle by trying our best to meet her individual needs.

Thanks to churches and businesses that have partnered with The Well, we are able to to offer:

• GED training

• Drivers ed

• Tutoring for their children

• Financial advisors

• Resourcing rehabilitation

• Providing knowledge and guidance to first time home buyers

• Childcare

• Crisis funds

• Car matching funds

• Safe and affordable transitional housing

Part 6: She gets a job

The dignity and financial freedom that comes with a job is an important part of rebuilding her life. Once she is a part of the program, she is eligible to be employed at Hon’s Honey. We are a purpose-driven business that uses local honey and beeswax to handcraft home and body goods. We train women in the art of beekeeping and harvest honey once a year.

Being a part of a team that makes beautiful products matters. Knowing someone has confidence in your matters. Doing purposeful work matters. Getting a paycheck matters.

Part 7: She pays it forward

She is equipped to come alongside the next woman who walks through the door to help her to rise, just as she has risen.

Some women have been promoted to management within Hon’s Honey and are currently training new hires. Some women have moved on to start their businesses or got another job per our recommendation. Some women have attended Peer Recovery classes to help other women on their recovery journey. Some gather once a month to consider how to come alongside the newest woman coming through the door. Others have gone back to rehab. Others have gone back to the streets.

At The Well, we continue to be a haven in the community for every woman who has ever entered our doors. Each of us is on a journey of healing.
